It’s a universal fact that we all wish for sunshine on holiday, and it’s true Cornwall is renowned for breathtaking beaches, stunning scenery and one-of-a-kind landscapes, but being blessed with such close proximity to the coast (the sand and surf is what it’s all about after all!), our days here at Holywell Bay can be dictated by the elements. Hang Ten
You’re going to get wet regardless, so why not embrace the elements and jump on in? This stretch of coastline is often referred to as surfing nirvana by those in the know, and for good reason! This side of Cornwall is renowned for consistent Atlantic swells and in the cooler months, the water is warmer and the surf is pumping, making it an ideal time to paddle out rain or shine. Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned boardie or a gremmie (a newbie surfer), the pro’s at Holywell Bay Surf School have got all you need to get going, from lessons to equipment hire. Let’s rip!
Retrace History With The National Trust
The magnificent late-Victorian country manor estate Lanhydrock House is a fascinating place to take shelter on a rainy day and explore. You’ll get a first hand glimpse into how the two sides of the house lived, from how the maids and servants kept the house running smoothly “below stairs”, compared to the comfort and glamour of “upstairs” living. There are heaps of interactive games throughout (for all ages!) and a National Trust cafe on site for nibbles. Similarly, nearby Trerice is a beautiful Elizabethan house near Newquay (smaller than Lanhydrock) but still makes for a lovely day out and also has a cute cafe in the old barn! If you have a National Trust membership, both houses provide free entry and parking for card holders.
Get Locked Up At Bodmin Jail
Just kidding! Mysterious and historic Bodmin Jail offers an immersive experience into Cornwall’s dark past (for those who dare!) and allows visitors to get up close and personal with the rich history of this Victorian jail on the outskirts of moody Bodmin Moor. A multi award-winning attraction, while there you’ll peer inside grimy cells, take draughty walks along stone corridors, discover the dismal conditions and harsh punishments, meet some of the jail’s most notorious inmates, and even take a glimpse at the only working execution pit in the UK. Become A Rainforest Explorer At Eden Project
Another consistently award-winning attraction in Cornwall, but it’s iconic for good reason! There’s tonnes to discover across these extensive gardens, but on a miserable day, the biomes are where you’ll want to be! Here you’ll trek through the world’s largest indoor rainforest and enter into the depths of fragrant Mediterranean serenity, but it’s not just about impressive, exotic plants, at Eden Project, it’s about science, sociology, ecology and exploring our human relationship with (and impact on) the natural world. What’s more is they’ve always got seasonal activities, games, tasks and fun things to get involved in! A great day out for all members of your gang.
Laugh Your Socks Off At Hall For Cornwall
It’s behind you! All year-round the Hall for Cornwall in Truro has a jam-packed roster of musicals, dance, plays, sing-alongs, stand-up, kid’s shows, performances and tribute acts for you to take your jolly-ole’ pick from. It truly is a one-stop-shop for entertainment in all weathers and seasons, but when the thunderclouds start rolling in, a family-friendly show in the warm and dry is hard to beat! Plus there are plenty of cafes (including the Green Room Café, Hall for Cornwall’s very own) and pubs nearby to take a pit stop in pre or post show to cosy down in.
