Holywell Bay beach is close, but not too close to Newquay. While it does get busy in the summer, it has a strong family feel about it in an unspoilt, rural area. The beach has seasonal lifeguards on hand to keep the kiddies safe while they explore the rock pools and small streams which wind down toward the sea. Holywell Bay is also a National Trust beach, offering free parking to its members. However, if you’re staying with us, you can walk from your accommodation!
If you feel like putting your walking boots on to do a bit of exploring, Holywell Bay beach is a starting point for 3 stunning coastal walks, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. Holywell Bay has some unbeatable sights and there’s no better way to see them than from the heights of the Cornish cliffs. Holywell Bay frequently receives excellent surf conditions, adding to Newquay’s status of being the home of English surfing. The beach is exposed to large swells which makes it popular with both surfers and bodyboarders. The name Holywell is derived from holy well and is believed to refer to the cave at the end of the beach. Described as one of the most remarkable sites in the British Isles, the cave contains unusual rock formations with a natural spring descending through a surreal, multicoloured grotto. The cave is only accessible at low tide (so keep an eye on tide times).
Holywell Bay is dog friendly with dogs allowed on the beach all year round. It’s a wonderful place to take a stroll across the stretch of sand with your pooch.
